When you listen to people talk about how to achieve their dreams or accomplish their goals, what do you most often hear?
Think about it for a second.
What you always hear is “You need passion!”
Well, I am going to make a bold statement here and say quite frankly, that is B.S.
I know that is going to rub some people the wrong way. I get it to some degree, but it is the truth.
Sure passion can help get you motivated. Maybe give you a boost of energy. But the question is, can it actually help you achieve your goals? Can it take you across the finish line?
I am here to say no, it cannot.
If you want to really achieve your goals, you need only need one thing.
A new mindset.
No passion. Just a completely different frame of mind.
Let me ask you something. Have you ever set out to achieve a new goal or come up with a new resolution only to have it fizzle out a short time later? I am talking about things such as losing weight or quitting smoking. What typically happens?
At first you get excited, right? You have passion, you have a burst of energy. Maybe someone gave you a motivating talk. Maybe it is a New Year’s resolution.
But what happens next? You begin to cheat here or there. Your routine starts to fall apart. Your motivation just isn’t there anymore. Next thing you know its completely done. Dead on the vine.
Have you ever experience this? I know that I have. Many times.
You had the passion, right? You felt it. You envisioned it. You wished for it. You did everything the gurus told you to do.
So what the hell happened?
I will tell you. You didn’t have the right mindset. Here is what I mean by that;
To really change, to conquer your goals, to achieve your dreams,
You have to turn your wants into a necessity.
In other words, you have to change your standard of living to the level of where you want to be.
Forget motivation, forget passion. You have to go bigger than that.
To get what you want, you have to require it to live.
You have to require it like you require air to breath.
Once you get in this mindset, only then will you achieve what you set out to accomplish.
Here is a great example which I heard from blogger Steve Pavlina;
Think about something you are proud of right now. A standard of living which you are happy with.
Lets say for this example, you are in good physical shape. You work out regularly, good diet, and have overall good health.
How would you feel if your mind was somehow implanted into the body of someone who was extremely obese, unhealthy and ate junk food all day. What would you do? How would you feel? You wouldn’t be able to stand it!
I am willing to bet that you would immediately change your lifestyle! That very day you would throw out all the junk food, start a workout program and start monitoring your health, right? In fact, I bet you would eventually get right back to your healthy body in no time at all.
Why is that?
It is because your mind is conditioned to have a healthy standard of living. In essence, it is who you are.
The reason you stay so healthy and in shape is because for you, it is necessary.
So in that same light, if you are looking to achieve a goal, you must make that goal so important, that it becomes part of you.
Do you want more money? Better finances? Don’t just make it a dream. Don’t just say “oh that would be so nice”.
Make it a necessity. Make it a must have. Make it the standard way of living for yourself and I guarantee you will start to see results.
Picture someone who already has more money than you do. Let’s say Warren Buffett.
Ask yourself, what would Warren Buffett do if he was in my current financial situation? How would he change? What would he spend my money on?
So now the question becomes, how do I change my standard of living to where I want to be?
The answer is pretty simple. You do it by changing your daily habits. You create a new routine. That is how change is made.
When you start a new habit, and really stick with it, you change the game. You become a new you. Almost like a different version of yourself.
Lets go back to the losing weight example. Want to get in better shape? Sure motivation and passion will help you get started. But to really lose weight and keep it off, you need to change your habits.
Change you habits to match you new mindset.
You need to start working out on a regular schedule, stop eating the junk food, start keeping track of your body weight.
These are all habits. All routines which need to change. But I guarantee if you kept these habits up, you would see change!
To take another example, lets say you are in a poor financial condition. How do you turn it around? Where do you even start?
What you do is look at your current habits. How do you spend your money? What do you spend your money on? Are you planning for your future?
If these habits are not satisfactory, then you need to replace them with new ones. Ones that will turn your finances around and set you on the path to success.
I hope this post has given you a new perspective on how to really achieve what you want.
A new path. A new way forward if you old system just is not working out.
It is not always easy to make big changes in your life, especially ones that completely uproot your lifestyle as you have always known it. But the important thing is not to be discouraged. Change is absolutely possible. It happens everyday, you may just not always notice it.
Just remember, passion and motivation can be great tools for getting started, but for real change to be effective you need to change your mindset.
Once you change your mind, then set up a new daily routine to match that change and you will be well on your way to a life full of happiness and abundance!
Until next time,
